This week’s Fitness Friday is for you Superbowl fans. We’ve got a little “deflatagate” of our own here – although this one’s not about football inflation or deflation, it’s about using the inflation of a balloon to really get into your diaphragmatic breathing. (If you’re not up on the whole deflatagate scandal, here’s a fun skit from last week’s Saturday Night Live to illuminate you 🙂 )

So diaphragmatic breathing…. what’s that all about? I asked that of Laura and here’s her response:

“If you’re not breathing with your diaphragm, three key core muscles will not fire: your transverse abdominus – which is like a corset around the top of your hips attaching to the bottom of your ribs, your pelvic floor, and your multifidus – which is up the inside of the back of your hips.”

In short: want a strong core? Breath diaphragmatically! Check out Laura’s video below for a fun tip on how to do this properly.

Laura Coleman - justmuscles.netLaura Coleman rocked my world a few years back when she helped me get to the root of all the knee and lower-back issues I’d had since my teens. In just a couple of sessions, Laura put me on a simple program of rehab exercises (unlike any I’d ever seen before) that brought my body back into alignment and actually fixed the problem that no physiotherapist, massage therapist, or chiropractor had ever been able to solve. I was hooked! We’ve been terrific friends and shared many clients since, and I’m delighted that she has offered to share her wisdom with all of you via this Fitness Friday video series. Laura lives in Portland, OR with her two gorgeous daughters. She works her magic at Club Sport and with clients all over the continent via the magic of technology (aka Skype). Check out her blog and website here.
